ABOUT ME
My name is Marlon Ashanga, I grew up in the Belen neighborhood (Iquitos, Peru) and I work as a local Amazonian guide providing jungle accompaniment to travelers from all over the world who visit my region. I started working as a local guide in 2008. For many years I dedicated myself to providing guide services in and around the city of Iquitos, and the Belen market as a must stop (also known as «jungle pharmacy» for the natural medicine you can find there).
Currently, and with the help of a friend who encouraged me, we started this small digital project as part of a strategy to improve the services I offer. I think it is a way to make you know my culture, my day-to-day experiences as a local guide and offer you security during our trip to the jungle or in this city so full of contrasts as this part of the region of my country, Perú.
On this personal website you will find a range of services, but if you are missing something, feel free to let me know your wishes.

Belen with Marlon is casual yet packed with experience Marlon is the perfect guide for Belen.Myself, wife (who is in fact Peruvian) and 10 year old daughter don't usually do "guided tours" but saw the reviews here and indeed Marlon tuned right in to our style. We messaged with him in advance, got the exact time and inclusive price sorted, and he met us on time at our AirBnB and off we went!Upper and lower Belen (during the dry season) was absolutely fascinating and rather intense. We've seen a lot of mercados in Peru but this was next level. Having him discreetly explain everything, checking in with his locals as we passed, and dive deeper into our questions was a complete education.Furthermore in our advance messaging he recommended us to Javier for a two day down river jungle stay which we have since experienced and that was similarly super. They are a network of passionate yet low key local experts.Marlon is highly recommended for all things Iquitos.![]()

Very good visit The visit was very interesting and lived up DE my expectations. The guide is very kind, cordial and accommodating. I totally recommend! The tour lasted two hours, I was able to taste different market products that the guide paid for (included in the price)![]()

Best tour guide in Iquitos! Marlon and his son were fabulous tour guides. We originally booked a tour of belen markets and had a fabulous time. He made sure we were safe, allowed us to try different local foods and drinks and gave us lots of information about the markets and the town. We wish we had booked our Amazon tour with him as well but unfortunately we could not cancel our other one. Instead we spent the day with Marlon and Taylor (his son) and he created a custom itinerary for us and took us to different places that we would not be seeing on our tour. Could not recommend a tour guide more, extremely friendly and knowledgeable. It was a pleasure!![]()

Incredible Belén experience! Marlon was an incredible guide that went above and beyond! My group was filming a documentary and he was a wealth of information and went beyond the time limit to help us with our video. He then helped us find a ride to our next destination. Would highly recommend him to anyone needing a reliable, informative guide! Would book again!![]()

Great guide for Belen markets We had 1 day in Iquitos and were looking for a guide to the markets whilst having breakfast. Luckily for us Marlon was available later that day and despite the torrential rain we had a wonderful time touring the upper and lower markets. Fortunately the rain had died down by the time we had an interesting trip onto the river. Marlon was so knowledgeable and friendly and had great English. We sampled so many different fruits in the market ending up with quite sticky fingers so I suggest taking something to clean them. I would highly recommend Marlon as a guide on any of the excursions he is running.![]()

Marlon gave us one of the best days of our lives My wife and I were planning our honeymoon to Peru when we booked the Belen Market tour with Marlon. Besides travel and lodging, the tour was the one thing we planned ahead of time in Iquitos. A few days before we arrived, Marlon reached out on WhatsApp and asked if we would be interested in hiring him for a day trip on the Amazon. For less than $250 total, we got one of the best days of our lives.First, after hiring a boat, Marlon took us to Monkey Island, the only location we had specifically requested, and patiently waited as we took our time on the grounds. Then, Marlon took us piranha fishing on one of the tributaries. His friend who owned the fishing platform had a tarantula and a baby caiman waiting for us to hold if we wanted, and offered us chips and cold beer (for a small additional charge).Next, Marlon took us to one of the local villages just down river from Iquitos, where we bought some snacks from the locals who kept shop at the bottom of an observation platform. My wife braided the hair of the shopkeeper's daughters while I enjoyed a cigarette and looked out on the river in the rain. From the village, Marlon took us into the jungle to observe an ancient cypress tree that straddled a ridge between two plantations. All through the day, Marlon was a gentle, informative companion and guide, telling us stories of his childhood in the jungle and youth in Iquitos. He pointed out wildlife, like the pink river dolphin, and spoke of local politics and jungle legends. We took the Belen Market tour the next morning before we went to the airport, and it was something of a vibe shift. Belen is a true wet market, teeming with bush meat and exotic goods, and absolutely packed with vendors and locals. Frankly, without Marlon, our presence would've been an ill-advised risk.I would recommend the Belen Market tour to anyone who wants to see a true wet market and experience a tourist-free atmosphere in an industrial jungle city. Not for the faint of heart!I would recommend Marlon as a day-guide on the Amazon to anyone. Our day on the river with him will surely go down as one of the most memorable and uplifting of our lives.![]()

An insiders eyes to the city. A most excellent tour, with plenty of personal touches from the insiders knowledge of the market, which me and my friend would have lost our selves in such a huge space. The change from the upper market where I would have got lost, to the lower market where I wouldn't go alone was something else to see, and the kindness to show us around his village and house was greatly appreciated to understand the people here. If you're coming to Iquitos for any touristy reason please don't forget to take a tour with Marlon, you'll never forget it.
