ABOUT ME
My name is Marlon Ashanga, I grew up in the Belen neighborhood (Iquitos, Peru) and I work as a local Amazonian guide providing jungle accompaniment to travelers from all over the world who visit my region. I started working as a local guide in 2008. For many years I dedicated myself to providing guide services in and around the city of Iquitos, and the Belen market as a must stop (also known as «jungle pharmacy» for the natural medicine you can find there).
Currently, and with the help of a friend who encouraged me, we started this small digital project as part of a strategy to improve the services I offer. I think it is a way to make you know my culture, my day-to-day experiences as a local guide and offer you security during our trip to the jungle or in this city so full of contrasts as this part of the region of my country, Perú.
On this personal website you will find a range of services, but if you are missing something, feel free to let me know your wishes.

An insiders eyes to the city. A most excellent tour, with plenty of personal touches from the insiders knowledge of the market, which me and my friend would have lost our selves in such a huge space. The change from the upper market where I would have got lost, to the lower market where I wouldn't go alone was something else to see, and the kindness to show us around his village and house was greatly appreciated to understand the people here. If you're coming to Iquitos for any touristy reason please don't forget to take a tour with Marlon, you'll never forget it.![]()

Belen market and Loreto ‘Venice’ Marlon was wonderful, answered any questions we had and explained what we were seeing. I would definitely recommend seeing this market but going with a guide. The market is huge and you could easily get lost!![]()

10/10 tour to learn more about the culture of Iquitos This tour was incredible! Marlon took us around Belen Markets & then on a mini boat tour. He expertly guided us through the vibrant markets, showcasing exotic fruits, meats, and the fascinating Shaman markets. Marlon also was kind enough to fit in an additional last minute excursion to see amazing wildlife like tarantulas, kambo frogs, sloths and anacondas (just to name a few!). I would highly suggest to book a guided tour to explore this part of Iquitos and if you do, I recommend booking Marlon! You won’t regret it. Marlon’s local knowledge, friendly demeanor, and accommodating nature made the day even more enjoyable!![]()

A Great Way to Explore Iquitos and the surrounding area While in Iquitos, a friend & I did a tour with Marlon and his friend Rosendo. I had requested the two of them. We had gone on a tour with Rosendo the day before. We wanted to go the Belen Market. We had been told by our hotel, not to walk down there by ourselves because it was too dangerous as tourists and that we would standout. It was recommended we go with a local guide. These guys were great. We saw a part of town we wouldn’t have seen otherwise and we got an insight into the local culture. We were taken out by a long wooden boat along the river. We got to see how the locals live. Expect to see makeshift outhouses on stilts over the river. Iquitos is a very poor city. The Belen Market is bustling with locals and a few tourists. There sell many jungle medicines, exotic foods, locally grown produce, locally made products and slaughtered meats of assorted variety. You can see large larva cooking on sticks, alligators, piranha, and more. There are homemade cures for many types of illnesses. You can see anything there! Endangered animals to hallucinogenics. Rosendo was explaining the jungle medicines and Marlon was pointing out things to us and steering us in the right direction. Marlon even took us by his home and showed us how he lives. It was really interesting to see what a minimalist lifestyle people live there. We had stated that we wanted to be back to our hotel by a certain time and they made sure to escort us back by motorcycle tuk tuks on time. They were flexible and willing to take us where we wanted to go and at suggesting places we may not have known about. Marlon’s English is great. Rosendo’s is good too. If I had more time there, I would’ve taken a few more tours. We felt safe (as 2 older women) traveling with either one of these guys. That is important when in a foreign country and in a very poor city. Highly recommended.![]()

Marlon is the best! Marlon is an absolute pleasure! He is so friendly and patient. He speaks great English and is so helpful. He goes above and beyond. He took me to all of the best shops in the market and made navigating the Belen Market a breeze. I was able to shop and feel comfortable in my surroundings. I wasn’t worried about getting charged more at the shops and I felt so safe with Marlon. He also made it easy to shop because he took me to buy exactly what I needed. I didn’t have to waste time wondering around. I was also able to sit down and enjoy a nice meal with him and his cousin who was driving us around in the Tuk Tuk. His cousin was so sweet and babysat my luggage all day. Marlon took me to see both levels of the Belen Market and I was able to see real parts of Peru and be exposed to the culture. There are impoverished areas in Belen that spend 4-6 months of the year under water. It is a very humbling experience and we should be grateful for what we have. Marlon also went out of his way to bring me to the place I was staying by boat! He truly is wonderful. Best guide I have ever had!!![]()

Marlon was excellent! I booked the Bethlehem tour on Trip Advisor and my expectations were completely exceeded. Marlon adapted to my needs and avoided turning the experience into something commercial. As I had more time to spend in Iquitos, I agreed with Marlon to take a full day tour the next day and it was an amazing experience! I recommend Marlon without reservation.![]()

Marlon is the BEST! Marlon met us at the hotel and walked us through the entire market explaining all the different types of fish, local veggies, and fruits. He was super knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely bring small denominations of soles if you plan on buying anything. 100% recommend!Don't wear jewelry. My drawstring bag was good.Bring your own water.Wear pants (I know it's hot and humid, but trust me).Hand sanitizer is a good idea.
